How do I know if home birth is right for me?
The short answer: Only you know if home birth is the “right” choice for you.💛
What does home birth care look like?
Schedule of Care
consult
The consult visit takes place over the phone (or Zoom, if you prefer a video call). We can ask each other questions and decide if we’re a good fit for one another in this pregnancy. If we decide to work together, I will send you some forms to fill out (this will get your chart started) and a link to setup your first prenatal visit.
between the consult call and our first visit
In addition to starting your chart, I will send information on options for lab work and imaging. Together, we’ll choose which of the available tests and screens to run in order to have the best picture of your overall health. Once you’ve made a decision as to which tests and screens you’d like to do (and which you’d prefer to wait on or decline), I can place requests for you at the laboratory and at the imaging center. Note: Both the lab and the imaging center take insurance.
initial prenatal visit
This visit takes place in the first trimester (or later, if you’re transferring care from another provider/facility). At this visit, we go over the Informed Choice documents (which are included in your chart) and talk about the results from any laboratory, ultrasound and genetic tests and screens you’ve opted to do. We’ll have time to talk, get to know one another better and ask any additional questions. We’ll also take a set of vital signs and if you’re 8 weeks along or further, we’ll listen for baby’s heartbeat.
additional prenatal visits
We get see each other throughout your pregnancy:
-Every 4 weeks until 28 weeks
-Every 2 weeks from 28 weeks to 36 weeks
-Every week from 36 weeks until you go into labor
labor and birth support
When you go into labor, give me a call! We’ll talk over the phone and decide together when it’s time for me to come. Amber (or another support person, if Amber’s unavailable) will come close to birth time. Your midwives will stay until a few hours after your babe is born, making sure that you both are stable, fed, healthy and well.
postpartum, lactation and well-baby care
I come back to your home and check-in on you and baby sometime between 24-36 hours after birth (at this visit the MN Department of Health’s newborn screens are offered), again sometime between 3-4 days postpartum, between 1-2 weeks postpartum and again at 6 weeks postpartum. I’m available for additional visits in the first 6 weeks, if you need more support, and am available by phone, as well.
Bodywork, Herbs and Other Types of Support
I believe that health is so much more than vital signs and lab results. In addition to baby-catching, I am also a Craniosacral Therapist, Breathwork facilitator and have a working knowledge of how we can partner with movement, food and herbs as part of our whole-health. These things will be incorporated into your care if they resonate with you. I also have the good fortune of knowing a number of IBCLC’s and postpartum doulas who are wonderful to work with and are available to support you as well.
Location
I partner with families who live in and within 30 minutes of Northfield and Burnsville, MN. Prenatal visits are done in our cozy office spaces and postpartum visits are done within the comfort of your own home

Hi. I’m kate.
In 2001 I became a parent. With that transition came an immediate and unyielding reverence for and interest in the full perinatal experience — pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. I have had the privilege of helping families as both a birth and postpartum doula, a hospice center caregiver, a clinical support associate at the Children’s Hospital NICU in St. Paul, a childbirth educator, bodyworker, Breathwork facilitator and finally, as a midwife.
what i’m into
Sharing information and learning from one another. Curiosity and an explorer’s spirit. Letting go. Doing our best. Land stewardship. Respect for plants and animals as sentient beings. Food, herbal medicine, playing outside. Honesty and candor with kindness. Accepting, being and loving ourselves for who we are. Bodily autonomy and personal sovereignty. Taking responsibility for ourselves. Working toward interdependence. Love, Love, Love, Love, Love.
